Grandmother-of-the-Bride Makeover

July 7, 2022

It’s possible to turn back the hands of time on by just how you dress. Go from Gran to Glam for your next summer wedding! I gave my neighbor Cristina a makeover for under $100 dollars that took her from “church lady” to “Queen of Genovia” (Julie Andrews from The Princess Diaries) making her look twenty-pounds lighter, younger and the best dressed wedding guest.

THE MAKEOVER

I wanted to give Cristina and updated look that screamed elegance and comfort for a long day at the church and reception. First I ditched her boxy unflattering two piece set. The pink brought out the red undertones in her skin which made her look like a lobster. The long draping and longer skirt only accentuated her tummy and made her look wider. Instead, I selected a deep V-A-line dress from Amazon for only $49.00 which brought the line of the eye up towards the smallest part of her waist and the the jewel tone of blue enhanced her features and silhouette. We kept the embellished sandals and added simple jewelry and bags from Macys.

5 Tips For Elevating Your Style at A Older Age

1. Fancy up your flats

Just because you’re wearing flats doesn’t mean it can’t be dressy. Select a shoe option that provides support, but has embellishments and rhinestone-encrusted details or a brightly colored ballerina flat. Have fun with the classics.

2. Flatter Your Figure

A wrap dress will never go out of style. Flatter your figure with a silhouette that will enhance your shape and bring the line of the eye up to the smallest part of your waist. This look works because I was able to highlight her assets in a flattering color. Stick to jewel tones and they are flattering on every skintone.

3. Make an understatement

It takes time to cultivate personal style and requires the kind of calm confidence and self-awareness that old women are famous for. Stand tall and don’t be afraid to make an entrance. The flow of the dress and her lips was the conversation piece. She received non-stop compliments all night. Sometimes the simplest looks are the chicest.

4. Carry a conversation piece

Handbags are one of the easiest and most fun ways to perk up your wardrobe and make a statement. Look for structured styles with elegant details, like antique folds, woven sides, bright colors, or oversized hardware.

5. Embrace the eclectic

To avoid looking like a “Golden Girl” try not to look prim, preppy or mortuary… You’re not dead! Now is the perfect time to experiment with artistic silhouettes, vests, tailored coats, wide leg trousers, funky clutches and pop-of-color patterns. Show off what you got and have fun!
